Learn and Grow in Dumbarton

Dumbarton My Learn and Grow in the community

Dumbarton lies on the north bank of the River Clyde, where the River Leven flows into the Clyde estuary. The town is at the intersection of two distinct strategic-scale green network corridors: a north-south corridor which connects Loch Lomond to the River Clyde and encompasses the Vale of Leven, and an east-west corridor between the Kilpatrick Hills and the Clyde which runs from Dumbarton via Bowling and Old Kilpatrick to Clydebank and then all the way into Glasgow city centre. Where the River Leven joins the Clyde estuary is the Inner Clyde Special Protection Area, an international designation.

Founded in the fifth century, Dumbarton was once the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde. The key to the town’s original success was the volcanic rock, which is now home to Dumbarton Castle. This dramatic volcanic plug, Dumbarton Rock, in-filled the crater of a volcano that was active 350 million years ago.

To the west of the town lies the ever popular Overtoun Estate which dates back to 1859. The grounds have a variety of landscapes, from wooded glens and gorges to rolling parkland and exotic gardens. Superb views of the surrounding Kilpatrick Hills can be enjoyed from the estate and access gained to the Langcraigs and Dumbarton Muir areas.

One of the town’s most popular visitor attractions is the Denny Tank Museum. The displays hark back to the glorious days of Clyde shipbuilding, offering a unique opportunity to step back in time to the days of the Victorian ship design, with displays of hull models and the working ship model testing tank.
